Rico Frans, Agung Wicaksono, Ahmad YuniartoSBM ITB held Alumni Forum 2014 with topic Future Challenges of Indonesia Business 2015 in Energy and Financial Services. Came as speakers were Ahmad Yuniarto (Chairman of Schlumberger Indonesia), Rico Usthavia Frans (Senior Executive Vice President for Transactional Banking of PT. Bank Mandiri Tbk), and Dr. Agung Wicaksono (Lecturer of SBM ITB) as moderator for this forum held at Jakarta Campus (6/12/2014).

“Energy sector is a sector where you don’t have to work for demand. Even when you are asleep, you will see the demand is growing. But in the other hand, that was very big challenge. Looking into 2025, we will get into the level of 8 million barrel oil per day. We should not only to maintain the level of production, but also to up the production. And the biggest revolution in term of energy is that we have to move away from the perception that Indonesia is rich of energy resources,” said the Chairman of Schlumberger Indonesia.

As we moved to Bank Mandiri’s as one of the leading financial services in the region, their challenge in next year as Rico stated, “Every 5 years, we have a long-term plan starting from phase 1 in 2005 – 2009, phase 2 in 2010 – 2014 and phase 3 2015 – 2020. Our vision is to lead domestic position and close remaining gaps in key areas, tap into high value regional opportunities. Of course, we would like to be the icon of Indonesia like Samsung in Korea, Sony in Japan or Apple in US. And when we talk about financial Industry, there is Mandiri in Indonesia.”

Moderated by Dr. Agung Wicaksono, both speakers received many questions from the audience. Ahmad Yuniarto explained to participants on the reason why we have the energy mix strategy. “To win out our dependency on fossil fuel, there is genuine inception to tap into: new and renewable energy beyond traditional fossil fuel. Indonesians say that Indonesia has the biggest potential geothermal resources in the world, but why geothermal energy is not growing” Some of the problem was actually a non technical problem that geothermal associated with the magma, and magma associated with volcano, and volcano is out there in the beautiful protected forest. And when we are talking about new and renewable energy, the biggest opportunity in Indonesia is not geothermal, is not even hydro. The biggest opportunity in Indonesia is biofuel and biomass”.

To close the session, moderator summed up the discussion content with note. “Be it developing energy sustainability or expanding financial inclusion, the key lies with the people. We need to have the right man on the right place, people with no vested interest and baggage from the past who can make the right decision. It is why revolusi mental (mental revolution) sounds easy but actually it’s very difficult, since it deals with simple decisions but can be tough for the persons with wrong mentality. This is the very basic fundament of mental revolution, instead of obliging civil servants to eat cassava or officials flying economic class,” highlighted Dr. Agung Wicaksono.

In this opportunity Dr. Yos Sunitiyoso as the Director of Jakarta Campus shared an update to the alumni. “As we have been growing, today’s number of Jakarta’s students has reached about 428 with total alumni of 346. And starting next year, we have a doctoral degree of science in management held in Jakarta and we do have some MBA alumni accepted as students,” shared Yos Sunitiyoso.

economic outlook2Industries in Indonesia need to focus more on exporting their products and services in order to stay competitive in the region. That was one of the conclusions of the Luncheon Talk on Indonesia’s Industry Analysis, Competitiveness, and Economic Outlook held by Jakarta campus (30/9/2015). Moreover, to attain competitiveness, some critical factors such as sufficient infrastructure, qualified human capital, and appropriate policies from the government needed to be improved.

Lecturer, Yudo Anggoro, PhD, delivered his talk on Industry Analysis and Competitiveness in Indonesia. Using the Industry Cluster model to measure competitiveness in Logistics and Automotive clusters, Yudo concluded that those two clusters were not competitive yet. In order to attain competitiveness, some critical factors needed to be improved such as sufficient infrastructure, qualified human capital, and appropriate policies from the government.

To continue the session, Syaiful Adrian as the Senior Equity Analysis from Ciptadana Securities presented his analysis on the recent economic situation in Indonesia. Syaiful stated that Indonesia as a nation was still dependent on the cycle of commodities in exporting its products. Syaiful added that Indonesia had not adequately stepped up the ladder to become producer of manufacturing goods and services that was competitive on a regional and global scale. Syaiful also warned us about Indonesia’s debt. He said that our current high external debt to GDP indicated that the economy was more fragile to the sudden shock of capital outflow.

Attended by the industrial partners, this luncheon talk was aimed to bring some insights to the audiences regarding the recent situation of our industries as well as the economy in bigger perspective.

42The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual global competition that provides university students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis. Students work in teams to research and analyze a publicly traded company – sometimes even meeting face-to-face with company management. Each team writes a research report on their assigned company with a buy, sell, or hold recommendation and may be asked to present and defend their analysis to a panel of industry professionals. Every country would be represented by one team that would be chosen from the winner from the country level competitions. This competition is regarded as one of the most prestigious competition for students in the field of finance. For CFA Institute Research Challenge 2015/2016, CFA Institute invited SBM ITB to join the preliminary round of this competition. A team from MBA ITB was founded to compete in this competition, and the team consisted of Hanindita Guritna (MBA YP-51), David Rinaldi (MBA YP-51), Felix Terahadi (MBA YP-51), and Samodro Bagus (MBA YP-51).

For this year’s competition, every team had to do valuation for PT. Semen Indonesia (SMGR), the largest cement company in Indonesia and had to submit the preliminary report on 30th November 2015. The team was struggled to build the report as that was the period of final exam, and the members of the team fell sick one after another. This made the effort to make the preliminary report was not maximum. Fortunately, apart from all the struggles, the team was able to submit the preliminary report on time. On 1st December 2016, CFA Institute Indonesia announced the top 5 teams who would be competing in the final round of the local round on 29th January 2016 in Jakarta based on the preliminary report submitted. After all of teams has presented all of their analysis, the jury announced the winners based on the score of the final report and presentation done by all finalists. page“Infrastructure is the foundation of where everything else will come up. The issue now is how you can attract investment in creating the infrastructure in Indonesia,” challenged the Vice President Diwakar Gupta of ADB at Jakarta campus (27/7/2016). The VP talked yesterday at the Studium Generale: The Most Critical Challenges Facing Infrastructure Financing in Indonesia.

In any developing economy (like in Indonesia), according to the VP, the amount of investment required in the changing for infrastructure was much more than what it had been earned. “And the amount that has been put in the infrastructure every year is 3 – 4% in which it against the minimum as it should be 5%,” said Diwakar Gupta. That was why the VP had challenged Indonesia to attract more investment from private sectors to finance while stating that ADB would continue to intervene with 1 billion per year and more. “Our aspiration to make it 2 billion per year,” told the VP.

To discuss more onto the critical role of financing infrastructure, lecturer Aries Firman stated, “Financing surely makes the project possible.” Besides that, as Aries continued to explain, financing had major impacts on riskiness of constructions, claims, and prices offered. The Global Project Management expert further added that the difficulty of financing was also a major driver towards alternate delivery methods while mentioning the consequences from the favorable indirect loan.

What are the key points of Indonesia infrastructure context? Indonesia Infrastructure Guarantee Fund (IIGF) demonstrated. Some key points presented by SVP of the CEO Office, Andre Permana:
1. Indonesia is one of the investment targets for International investors and banks in infrastructure sector.
2. There is an urgent need for infrastructure development to sustain stable economic growth, serve strong domestic demand and for Indonesia to remain competitive.
3. A number of positive developments in infrastructure sector has been driven by the Government, i.e creating of land fund, infrastructure fund, guarantee fund and viability gap fund as well as new Land Law insurance.

As a kick off for TK Low Series of Seminar, the event was moderatored by Deputy Director Yudo Anggoro and opened by the School Advisory Chairman Kuntoro Mangkusubroto. The 2-hour studium generale was attended by the civitas as well as practitioners in the respected field.

IMG_8471Associate Professor of Management and Organizations, Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, Adam Waytz identified six biases occurred in the process of decision-making. The Professor then shared about how to “Shield” against those biases and how they could actually be used as “Weapons” to influence people. Adam talked at Jakarta CMO Club Special Learning Edition Forum organized by MarkPlus Inc at SBM ITB in Jakarta (21/11/2016).

According to Adam, humans were far from being perfectly rational and instead were susceptible to bias, emotion, and intuition that caused even the smartest leader to make bad decisions. Luckily, said the Professor, psychological science had identified that irrational tendencies were systematic, and thus decision-making errors were predictable than random. Knowing how to recognize these bugs of our decision-making habits helped turn capable leaders into decision-making warriors.

IMG_8476_“By understanding the process, you can protect yourself from making errors. There are six biases influencing the decision-making process: (1) Loss Aversion, (2) Availability, (3) Overconfidence, (4) Anchoring, (5) Escalation of Commitment, (6) Confirmation,” said Adam.
He later enclosed the lecture with how to get the rational decision-making by getting more information, ask the right questions, collect diverse data from diverse sources, and consider the opposites.

IMG_1478_“Overall the progress is 65%. We targeting the project will finish and open for public in March 2019,”said the Head of Business Development Division, Fuad Fachroeddin, on Thursday (2/3/2017). As part of Operation Management class, students of Executive MBA ITB had a chance to visit the most anticipated public transportation in Jakarta. For more than an hour, the 50 students witnessed the construction after more than two decades of postponement. The US$1.7 billion rail-based MRT megaproject is expected to solve the traffic gridlock in the capital Jakarta.

The visit to MRT began from Jalan Sudirman. Wearing personal protective equipment and a safety helmet, they went down to almost 30 meters to explore the curved tunnel. Although the air was thick and hot like wandering into a steam bath, they were impressed by the infrastructure of capital’s first ever underground railway.

Just a couple of weeks ago as written by the Jakarta Post, President Jokowi also visited the tunnel and announced the progress. During his visit, the President wished to have the construction completed during the Asian Games in August 2018.
